About Professor Zhang

Professor Zhang Xiujuan is a clinician-scientist with expertise in research on myopia research, ocular epidemiology, and blindness prevention. She has the research focus on myopia and its intervention, particularly low-concentration atropine eye drops for myopia control. She graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with a PhD degree in Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. She has led five ocular epidemiological studies, involving a total of 10,000 subjects, for her PhD projects. She coordinated the Hong Kong Children Eye Study, a comprehensive investigation involving 40,000 children to investigate the epidemiology of myopia and paediatric ocular diseases. Her primary involvement in clinical trials of low-concentration atropine has been instrumental in advancing the treatment and prevention of myopia.

Research and Awards

As a Principal Investigator, Professor Zhang has obtained seven grants, including four external competitive grants, with funding of HK$7,680,000 from 2020 to 2024. She has more than 60 publications and published in international journals, including JAMA, The Lancet Global Health, JAMA Network Open, Ophthalmology, NPJ Digital Medicine, and JAMA Ophthalmology. She is the recipient of local and international awards and honours in research and professional services including the Global Fellowship Award from the University of St Andrews in the United Kingdom in 2023, the Outstanding Research Impact Award from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2022 (Co-I) and Hong Kong Outstanding Youth Volunteer Group Award. The intelligent glasses ‶My-O-Analyser″ as an objective measure for lifestyle monitoring, co-invented by Professor Zhang, has obtained 4 international awards, including a Silver Medal in the Geneva International Exhibition of Inventions.
