Professor Jimmy Lai graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, the University of Hong Kong in 1983. He joined the Eye unit at the Prince of Wales Hospital in 1984 where he received his basic and higher surgical ophthalmology training. He spent 6 months in the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh for his higher surgical training in 1989. He obtained his Fellowship and Master degree in 1990. He obtained the Fellowship of the Academy (Ophthalmology) in 1993 and became the founding fellow of the College of Ophthalmologists of Hong Kong in 1995. Professor Lai continued his ophthalmology practice at the Prince of Wales Hospital which was the teaching hospital of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his pre-fellowship training in the Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh and post-fellowship training in the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Boston, and the Aichi University, Nagoya, Japan. He started his involvement in scientific research and publications in the late 90s. His sub-specialty interest is in glaucoma. He is a pioneer in applying argon laser peripheral iridoplasty (ALPI) to the initial treatment of acute angle closure glaucoma and acute phacomorphic glaucoma. With his work on this area, he obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004. He is also a pioneer in introducing the selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) and goniosynechialysis (GSL) to Hong Kong for the treatment of open angle and closed angle glaucoma. Before he joined the Department of Ophthalmology, the University of Hong Kong in 2008, he worked in the United Christian Hospital as a consultant ophthalmologist.

Research Interests :

Professor Lai’s research interest is in the management of angle closure glaucoma. His work in the surgical treatment of chronic angle closure glaucoma (CACG) using phacoemulsification and phaco-trabeculectomy has generated the following 4 publications:
