Announcing the HKU Ophthalmology Distinguished Lecture Series

Announcing the HKU Ophthalmology Distinguished Lecture Series

2021-05-14

We are proud to announce the launch of the ‘HKU Ophthalmology Distinguished Lecture Series’. The quarterly lecture series will focus on four themes: (1) community ophthalmology, (2) ophthalmic education, (3) research advances, and (4) beyond ophthalmology. Each lecture will take one of the specific themes and feature a speaker of eminence within and outside ophthalmology and medicine to deliver a distinguished lecture in his/her area of excellence. We will host four exciting lectures per year.

We are delighted and proud to have Professor Walton Li; the visionary founding head of the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital Department of Ophthalmology and its Medical Superintendent, as our first Distinguished Lecture orator. He currently serves as an Honorary Professor of both the HKU Department of Ophthalmology and the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine.

Professor Li received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1974. He then served as ophthalmic resident at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Los Angeles and then underwent a fellowship in Cornea and External Eye Diseases at the world renowned Jules Stein Eye Institute of his alma mater. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1979. He subsequently returned to Hong Kong, and established the Department of Ophthalmology at the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital, where under his talented leadership, the Department has become the important pillar of ophthalmic care in Hong Kong that it is today. He has since carried his visionary work forward as the hospital’s Chairman, Board of Directors and Medical Superintendent. The Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital was recently officially recognised as one of the very best hospitals in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Apart from clinical care and health administration, Professor Li has dedicated much of his time to supporting the development of healthcare and health education in Hong Kong and around the world as Chairman of the Li Shu Fan Medical Foundation. He also contributes his time to the University of Hong Kong as a member of the Court of the University of Hong Kong and a member of the Second Board of Directors of the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital. For his enormous contributions as a giant of ophthalmology and healthcare, Professor Li has received a number of honors, including the Honorary University of Fellowship at the University of Hong Kong, the Open University of Hong Kong and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2014, Professor Li was conferred the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa by the University of Hong Kong.

We believe the theme of community ophthalmology is befitting a lecture on Professor Li’s life work, which has made a lasting impact on our field, the medical community at large and most of all, Hong Kong. He is a shining beacon of light for our city.

Our first lecture will take place in June 2021.

Date : June 15, 2021 (Tuesday)

Time : 7:00 – 8:00 p.m
