Our PhD Student Yashan Bu Attends the 10th Global Young Scientist Summit
2022-02-12
We are pleased to share that our PhD student, Ms Yashan Bu, was selected to represent HKU Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine at the 10th Global Young Scientist Summit (GYSS) between the 17th - 21st of January 2022.
GYSS is organized by the National Research Foundation, Singapore (NRF). The 4-day Summit provides a platform for young scientists to foster the exchange among like-minded peers globally.
Here is what Yashan has to say about her experience:
"With great honour, I was invited as a participant for the 10th GYSS that took place virtually in January 2022. It was my first opportunity to listen to talks and lectures from Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry and Physiology/Medicine, and to interact with them. Their talent, creativity, perseverance, and commitment to science have impressed me and made me understand what essential qualities are needed to be a successful scientist. Meanwhile, I was also amazed by the power of interdisciplinary research, where for example neuroscience could be better understood with the technology of computer science.
It was surprising to hear other young scientists recount their research experience and how they tackled problems that I also encountered on a regular basis during my PhD studies. It is reassuring to know that we are not alone on what often feels like a lonely pursuit and career. “You only grow in failure, rather than in success”, said Prof Alessio Figalli, one of the plenary speakers at GYSS and winner of the 2018 Fields Medal. Although it was not the first time for me to hear such words, the impact was much more significant coming from such an experienced and well-established career scientist. This reminded me once again that one should never declare failure even before trying but be prepared for any obstacles on the journey with a clear goal in mind. I am grateful to HKUMed for this opportunity for person and professional growth and development."
